If you have an old bed or mattress and require a mattress disposal solution, Birmingham has five mattress recycling facilities run by Birmingham City Council that’s free for all Birmingham residents.

The booking process is easy and you can get an allocated time slot which, if you are in a hurry can usually be booked the same day.

Upon arrival there is a request to present your proof of Birmingham residency (utility bill or driving licence).

These facilities provide an excellent mattress removal option as Birmingham City Council have partnered with Veolia that ensure all recyclable components are derived in the recycling process. It’s free to use too.

Transporting your old bed or mattress for recycling would naturally require a suitably sized car (vans would require a permit).

For larger double or king size mattresses or for bed bases, some car types will struggle.

Consideration should also be given to the preservation of car interiors as bed bases can often damage or scratch the interior.

Birmingham City Council also provide a mattress collection solution whereby they will collect your mattress or bed as part of their bulky waste collection service where a charge is paid prior to booking on their website.

They allow 20 bin bags or any item equivalent to 20 bin bags: a mattress should fall well within its 20 bin bag equivalent.

Items have to be placed outdoors which may deter some residents not wanting their old mattress or bed left outside in view of neighbours.

The following list of charities offer a bed or mattress collection but do have a criterion: all items must be in usable condition and fire resistant (all beds and mattresses manufactured in the UK after 1988 are fire resistant).
